Frustrated by overused job search sites, many job hunters are turning to smaller, regional alternatives.  Conversely employers are frustrated with receiving hundreds & hundreds of resumes world-wide.

“I've spent a lot of time on the big job search web sites,” says Michael Patterson, an unemployed technical writer from Tillsonburg, Ont. “But it gets depressing applying for job after job and never hearing a word of response.”

Indeed, standing out in the global employment village is getting harder as online recruiting sites gain popularity. According to emarketer.com, over 2,000,000 users access the monster.com site on an average week, and hotjobs.com receives 800,000 visitors. These sites open local jobs to a global audience, and in today's tough market many professionals are willing to relocate anywhere for work.

That's why job seekers are increasingly turning to sites focusing exclusively on local employment. These sites offer appealing visitor-to-jobs ratios, improving the odds for candidates. With a narrower field of options, these sites are also easier to use and navigate.

A new option is PeopleQuest.ca. This new venture, driven by human resources consultants People Management Group in Woodstock, will initially cater to Oxford County but will expand to include more of Southwestern Ontario. The site functions like other job search sites employers can sort through pre-screened candidates and candidates can access local job postings. But Peoplequest.ca is more than a one-time matchmaker, says President Cheryl DeCooman. “It's really for forward thinking companies that are always looking for the right people,” she says. “It's a proactive online recruiting site for employers.” The site also includes job search tips and a variety of resources for both candidates and employers.

For job hunters it's a chance to stand out where it often matters most: a local setting. Detailed company profiles help candidates understand a company's business, desired skill-sets, and company culture. Employers like it too because they can attract great local candidates even if they don't have applicable jobs posted. And the reduced volume of applicants enables them to respond more effectively.

The site will launch in September for a pilot phase that will ramp up traffic and registration levels through the fall. Early indications show high demand, and some of the companies already involved include Town & Country Retread and  VanParys Micacchi Shippey & Warnick LLP.
